Radar detectors are illegal only in Virginia, Washington DC, and most parts of Canada. They are also illegal in all 50 states for commercial drivers, such as truck drivers and taxi drivers.
If you are not a commercial driver, and you are not in Virginia or Washington DC or Canada, then it is perfectly legal to use a radar detector.
In flat, open conditions the range is at least 2 miles. Please note that road conditions (hills and curves) can affect the range.

"have had many cobra products over the years, purchased this RAD 380 march of 25 on amazon order#113-6810639-9218614 and the light display went out. didn't concern me to much as i can still hear the audible alert. now the audio alerts have stopped working. guessing next time i buy a warranty"

"Haven't had or used a detector in about 40 years. Bought this one on a whim. Don't really need it because I don't speed but you never can be too careful. Made it's first trip last week to Dallas area and back and it was fun and interesting interpreting all the signals it was picking up. "I get lots of false alerts"
"I have had one in my pickup for a couple of years and I just got one for my car. The car is a special one and seldom get it out but I expect it will work good for me. I think it will alert you asap but people need to realize that they are not fool proof, meaning that if you drive like a fool , sooner or later you are going to get a driving award. You have to use your judgement. I have around 5 million miles on me and I have had only a couple of speeding tickets. They are now outlawed in trucks but I had one right up to 2007 when I retired. The 380 gives you very few false signals and when that happens , it is just a few beeps and done. Anything else is going to drive you nuts with the trucks and stuff on cars. I am very satisfied with it."
