From this page you can update the red-light camera / fixed radar database in your radar detector.

The updater will ONLY work with the following models:

    • XRS R7
    • XRS R9G
    • XRS 989
    • XRS 9950

If you do not have one of the above models, then please Click Here.

Please note that some of the above models require the purchase of an optional GPS Locator.

Current database version: 1.25

System Requirements

    • PC Running Windows 2000, XP, or Vista.
    • Mini USB cable (commonly used with digital cameras). You may use the retractable USB cable that comes with your unit.

How to Check the Database Version in your Unit

    • Make sure the GPS Locator is connected to the main detector unit. Turn on your radar detector and let it start up normally.
    • On the remote, press the MENU button.
    • Now keep pressing the CITY button until it says "GPSL DATA".
    • The database version will be displayed.

If you do not have the latest database, then please proceed below.

NOTE: DO NOT connect the GPS Locator to your PC until instructed to do so.

Download and Install the Cobra GPS Data Updater Program

1. Click the link below to download the Updater Program. When prompted, choose "RUN". You must then wait for the file to download. (NOTE: If your internet browser does not offer a "RUN" option, then you will need to first save the file and then run it.)

GPSL Updater v2.1

2. If you get a security warning, just click "RUN".

3. Follow the prompts to install the software.

Install the USB Device Driver

NOTE: This only needs to be done once. If you have previously installed the software then please skip to the section "Update the Database".

The following instructions pertain to Windows XP.  If you have Windows Vista, the installation process may differ.

    • First, make sure you have downloaded and installed the Cobra update program as described above.
    • Now connect the GPS Locator to a USB port on your computer.
    • Your computer should find new hardware and start the "Found New Hardware" wizard. If you do not get the "Found New Hardware" wizard, then please refer to the troubleshooting section at the end of this document.
    • If the wizard asks "Can Windows connect to Windows Update to search for software?", click NO and then click NEXT.
    • The wizard should identify the new hardware as an XRS-R9 GPSL. Choose "Install the software automatically" and click NEXT.
    • The wizard will install the required driver. When it is done, click on FINISH.
    • Disconnect the USB cable from the GPS Locator.

Update the Database

    • If you have a dial-up internet connection, please first connect to the internet.
    • There should be an icon on your desktop titled "Cobra GPS Data Update". Double-click on the icon. If you cannot find the icon, then click on START >> PROGRAMS >> COBRA.
    • The Data Update program should start, and prompt you to connect the GPS Locator (the GPS Locator is the small black box that connects to the detector unit).
      • (NOTE: If you get a pop-up message that says PULL OUT USB, then the GPS Locator is already connected to a USB port. Unplug the GPS Locator and then click on OK. The Data Update program should then start.)
    • Now connect the GPS Locator to the USB port on your PC.
    • When prompted, enter the serial number of your GPS Locator and click on ENTER.
    • The Data Update program will connect to the Cobra website via the internet and download the latest database into your GPS Locator. If you already have the latest database, you will see a pop-up window that says "Current version is up-to-date version." Click on OK and the program will end.
    • After the database has been downloaded, you may disconnect the USB cable from the GPS Locator.

This concludes the database update.

USB Device Driver Troubleshooting (Windows XP)

If you do not get the "Found New Hardware" wizard, it is probably because you had previously connected the GPS Locator to a USB port before installing the Cobra software. Proceed as follows:

    • Try connecting the GPS Locator to a different USB port on your computer. If you now get the "Found New Hardware" wizard, then proceed with step 4 of the device driver installation.
    • If you still do not get the wizard, then do the following:
      1. From the desktop, right-click (not left-click) on My Computer.
      2. Click on Properties.
      3. Click on the Hardware tab.
      4. Click on Device Manager.
      5. Look for a yellow question mark that says USB Device.
      6. Right-click on USB Device (not left-click) and choose Uninstall.
      7. After the device has been uninstalled, disconnect the USB cable from the GPS Locator.
      8. Proceed with step 1 of the device driver installation.
